Skilled Carer Course

1: Introduction

An introduction in detail about what will you be hearing about and learning throughout the 15-20 step Course.

2: Why Emotional Education?

A critical aspect that creates success is when all team members know and understand a common language, so that’s, support workers, family members and participants and this creates a comfortable and supportive environment for the participant to practice their regulation skills. It also helps the person learn the skills more quickly and be more likely to apply them in many situations.

These strategies and concepts will be explored in later videos. I would not expect anyone to be able to listen to these concepts and be able to successfully implement them without more detail.

3: Foundation & States of Emotion

This is the fundamental learning block for how to build positive relationships with people.

A Quick Summary:
1. Always validate a feeling and recognise. Don’t tell someone how they should feel or that they are being ridiculous. Perception is reality, and the emotions we experience are real, regardless of what anyone else thinks. If someone fails a level in a video game and has a meltdown it is because they are genuinely feeling those emotions but are not able to contextualise the issue with a world view of big and small problems, remember an individual doesn’t always have a world view and hasn’t always experienced loss and if they have they may not have been in a place they could understand what was going on.
2. Acknowledge and reinforce with positive comments when the individual is sharing their emotions, zones or using strategies rather than pulling them up when they aren’t.
3. There are no bad emotions. There are a spectrum of emotions that we all feel from time to time, and there are times when each emotion is relevant.
4. Use different emotion words more often to help the individual develop their emotional vocabulary. It is common for people with disability to only be able to communicate or understand 2-3 emotions. Sad, angry and happy. Take the time to read the Social and Emotional Learning wheel to learn all the sectors that interlink
